More Details

Hosted by Finest City Improv, a 60 seat theatre with full bar, food, and training center on site at the historic Lafayette Hotel in the North Park neighborhood of America’s Finest City.

Guarantee great seats to every show with a VIP Festival Pass. Single show ticket holders are admitted to theater between each block and seating is general admission. Standby seating for free performer tickets begins approximately 5 minutes before each show. Performers may request a standby line number 30 minutes before each show.

Accommodations are available at a special reduced festival rate for performers and ticket holders on the on-site Lafayette Hotel and Swim Club. There are also many hotels less less than a mile away in Hotel Circle.

The theater is about a $15 ride-share ride from the airport. There is no good public transportation – there, we just said it.

How do teams submit to the festival?

Submissions are now closed for the 2017 festival.  Submissions are collected via the Improv Network.  Look for the 2018 call for teams in the summer of 2017.

How are teams selected?

Videos of each team are reviewed by a panel of approximately 20 improvisers from the local San Diego community, particularly Finest City House Team members.  Teams are scored on 3 criteria: engaging, funny, and unique.  The scores are averaged and the top scores are invited to the festival for up to 75% of the show slots.  Two slots are reserved for the host theater’s house team, one for an independent teacher show, one for last year’s “Best of Fest”, and one for “Single Riders”, players that applied individually to the festival for this team.  The remaining slots (approximately 10) are chosen by random lottery from the remaining teams to increase the number of less experienced or lesser known teams in our festival.  We call it the Blind Date. We also may invite one or more teams that have significant experience and awards to headline the festival.

How are teachers booked for the festival?

Teachers submit their interest to teach a workshop via the Improv Network submission tool.  Preference is given to teachers that are part of a selected team or that have significant experience and high demand from our community.
